Inquiry Based Learning

Play-based learning in a culture of Inquiry is a component of our curriculum. It focuses on educators using their professional knowledge and skills to co-create inquiry with the children in order to support their learning through play.

"Research suggests that students are more likely to develop as engaged, self-directed learners in inquiry-based classrooms." (Jang, Reeve, & Deci, 2010)

Some of the Inquiries we have fostered in our class are:
  • Collecting, observing and planting different types of seeds and predicting which one will grow the fastest.
  • Why do Pirates wear eyepatches? studying the life of a pirate, looking at maps, direction, and transforming our dramatic play area into a pirate ship.
  • Opening up an Ice Cream parlour, deciding which flavours to have, making hats and other accessories we needed
  • Opening up a Dentist office, making a schedule for the hours of operation, creating waiting lists, using real-life materials (toothbrushes, floss, masks,  toothpaste, fluoride fillers etc.) role playing (dentist, hygienist, secretary)
  • Looking at different flags of the world, choosing a country's flag and drawing it, adding a fun fact about that country or wondering of what happens in that country
