Our new clasroom friends

Yesterday we welcomed a new arrival of baby Lady Painted Caterpillars... we were so excited to have them in our classroom!
There were very tiny caterpillars in a container along with lots of food!
We wanted to get a closer look!
Then we transferred them into new homes.
We decided that they each needed a name, so we gave them one:

We are keeping a journal of observations where we are recording what we see each day. Here are some students working on theirs:

As a class, we looked at the life cycle of a caterpillar. The next day, one of our friends went to the library and found a book about them and drew/coloured his own diagram!!

Other children were exploring natural materials that were laid out as an invitation to play/create with.
Others, were busy adding to our seed list:
One of our friends brought in something amazing! Her and her mother had been growing lettuce at home and it started to sprout, so she wanted to share it with us. We are keeping it in water to see if it continues to grow..
Some of us painted our own garden and then 'planted' some seeds in it:

This was how the finished product turned out:
Here is some collaborative work. These girls are so creative. They decided to draw pictures of various kinds of fruits and then write down how many seeds each fruit has.
She wanted to make a picture for one of the Birthday boys in our class, and chose to draw insects because he loves them so much!
Building with different materials!
We did a simple subtraction lesson, counting down from 10 and solving the problem on our SmartBoard.
The challenges this student takes on are truly remarkable. Believing in her abilities as a learner, has led us to witness some of the most outstanding work we have ever seen. We are so proud of her and the achievements she has made this year by showing confidence in her work and continuing to strive.
Can you believe this is one of our SK's?!!
She is currently on her third page..to be continued..

We hope you enjoy the rest of the week and remember that Thursdays are ALWAYS Library Day! Many children have been forgetting their book bags and are unable to exchange when we go to the Library :(

Happy Mothers Day!!

We hope you all had a lovely Mother's Day yesterday and enjoyed the flower arrangement and artwork your child brought home for you. Here is what we made in class. We used an idea off of Pinterest:
We are so happy with the way they turned out and the effort the children put into them to make them special for you!
We received some BEAUTIFUL roses today to brighten up our room! :)
When we came in this morning, leaving our plants by the window, we were amazed at how fast they grew over the weekend!
Even the lentils sure are growing quickly!
Sunflower seeds that were planted on Friday already started to sprout!
We started a new inquiry last week with a small group of students who were really interested in making the sea and looking at what creatures and fish live there. So, we went up to the Art room and chose some colours for our water, showing different colours as the depths of it. The darker it gets, the deeper it goes.
We watched a YouTube video on jellyfish to see what they look like and how they swim. then we added them to our mural.
We also added some different kinds of fish that live in the sea:
Here is an octopus and a seahorse done by one of our JK's:
Today, some of us still wanted to draw plants and the life cycle of a plant:
 "It's a playdough flower!"
She wanted to write her own story, so we stapled some blank pages together and she has fully illustrated it. Maybe we can add it to our classroom book collection when it is complete ;)

Have a happy rest of the week!!
